The METRO Tunnel Project
April 1987
During the 1980's, skyscrapers were going up everywhere in downtown Seattle. The Metro Tunnel project had major portions of 3rd Avenue dug up, and all of Pine Street from 3rd to 7th and 8th Avenues. Motor traffic throughout the city stayed in a snarl. It was during this period that Seattleites started referring to their city as 'Little Beirut', after that war torn Middle Eastern city that had once been one of the true gems of the civilized world.
